Bringing history to life with technology

RAM in Oudenburg offers visitors an immersive and interactive experience where archaeological artifacts, reconstructions, and projections come together to bring the history of the castellum and its inhabitants to life. With a strong focus on experience and the integration of physical and digital elements, RAM succeeds in inspiring and informing both locals and tourists.

As a pioneer in interactive technology, Ocular played a key role in the transformation of RAM. By seamlessly merging archaeological discoveries, digital experiences, and audiovisual storytelling, a groundbreaking museum concept was created where technology and heritage go hand in hand.

An interactive journey to the year 325 AD

The exhibition’s central storyline is built around the year 325 AD, when the Oudenburg fortress was rebuilt by Emperor Constantine’s soldiers as part of the strategic Roman coastal defense, also known as the Litus Saxonicum. Ocular provided a technological infrastructure that immerses visitors in this historical period through:

  • Immersive projections that transport visitors to the ancient Roman fortress.

  • User-friendly audio guides allowing visitors to explore the story at their own pace.

  • Interactive multimedia solutions that realistically depict historical events and daily life in the Roman era.

Een samenwerking tussen experts in (digitale) beleving

This project was realized through close collaboration between Ocular, Madoc, and Timescope:

  • Ocular provided all hardware, software, and multimedia solutions that form the core of the immersive experience.
  • Madoc was responsible for the exhibition design and scenography.

  • Timescope produced various historical film productions.

Thanks to high-quality projection technology and interactive elements, visitors can experience the fortress and the lives of Roman soldiers in a completely new way. The visual and auditory narrative elements enhance the exhibition’s impact, creating a profound and lasting impression.

From static museum to a dynamic experience

"We are no longer a classic museum. We don’t just display artifacts and texts—we bring these objects and their stories to life through virtual immersive projections and re-enactment films."
